In yet another landmark achievement in the expansion of the unwavering bilateral defence cooperation between Pakistan and China, Beijing on Wednesday delivered the third of the four F-22P frigates PNS Saif to the Pakistan Navy.
The newly built warship of the sword class series constructed by Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard Shanghai was delivered in a colourful and impressive ceremony, The Nation reports.
As per the schedule, the Pakistan Navy has already decided to go ahead with its plans to get the fourth ship constructed at the Karachi Shipyard, which is progressing satisfactorily.
This move by the Navy would be of great help to Pakistan in achieving self-reliance towards defence of its territorial waters.
F-22P Frigates are equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors.
The ships also carry Z9EC helicopters onboard. The Z9EC helicopters have been acquired from China under the contract with China National Aero technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC). The first batch was inducted last year which has been successfully taking part in Naval Air Operations. These helicopters operate from F-22P Frigates which now make an important part of PN Fleet. The helicopters are equipped with advanced sensors and torpedoes for undertaking designed role of Anti Submarine Warfare.
With the addition of these ships, the strength of PN Fleet has increased considerably with much needed capabilities, while contributing in enhancement of country's shipbuilding capabilities.
The ship, which has been named as PNS Saif, is the third of its series of four F-22P Ships.
The design and construction of these ships began in 2005 after a contract was signed between the Ministry of Defence Production and China Ship Building and Trading Company (CSTC).
As per the contract, three ships were to be constructed in China, while the fourth ship at Karachi shipyard under transfer of technology arrangements.
The first and second F-22P ships named as PNS Zulfiquar and PNS Shamsheer have already been commissioned in Pakistan Navy.
Admiral Noman Bashir, the chief of Naval Staff, who attended the commissioning ceremony said the relationship between Pakistan and China is unique, which has matured over the years particularly in defence
Admiral Bashir emphasised on the need for strengthening the relationship further, along with Pakistan's commitment of achieving the common objectives of peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
